OT: Old skidders

Saw an older JD 440 Skidder plowing snow. Not too huge, lots of clearance, dsl powered, and one hell of a winch. Think maybe I should skip the Uni-Mog phase. I could use a machine like this almost every day, winter or summer.

Guy said he paid $5,000 for the one I saw, and I've heard of other people picking up skidders for not too much...although internet prices from dealers seem to be up there in 4X4 backhoe territory and most of them are a lot bigger than I'd want.

A friend suggested a small Timberjack as apparently they run a Detroit and parts are easier on the wallet than JD. I've also heard that gas-powered skidders are used to drag the shorter logs cut for pulp mills, but I've never seen one like that in the PNW. Anybody have any experience with these machines? Anybody have one they want to sell?

Thanks!
dj
