You are right about the overall quality of the mechanism. That gear was formed by being stamped. The dished appearance is normal. That gear was one of four parts we salvaged from an early WC 1/2 ton that was burned up in a barn fire 20 years before we found it. The "heat treated" gear is now on the regulator on my son's 1941 WC, 1/2 ton, 2WD pickup. The other parts were the grill and two front tow hooks.
