I once used work hardening braze rod to repair a cracked exhaust seat in my old "F" head jeep engine years ago - my neighbor had a complete set of valve seat reamers so i did
not ruin a sioux seat stone
yes the correct way is to remove engine, dis-assemble, put block in forge, heat for a few days until color is correct and then braze then cool, line bore (or check) main
bearings, re-assemble put back in truck
but the "In-Truck" repair you are doing is a standard old time (maybe not so old) method
of repair.
