Tom, that's a good story. The fellow that sold you the motor sounds like a great guy! No bad Karma sticking to him.

I have had both good and bad luck with stored, "running when pulled" engines. My grandpa gave me an engine for my WC42 when I was in high school, I installed it with great difficulty working in the mud and rain under a shed roof attached to a chicken coop, got it in, and when I started it an exhaust valve popped off its stem and went through the piston. Big mess, pull the head, buy a new piston, etc. Luckily the cylinder walls weren't damaged and I ran the truck for a lot of years with that engine.

Other times I've been real lucky, $300 to $500 bucks and got a great engine that's lasted very well. One good source I've found is people are starting to turn more of the '40s 2wd Dodge trucks and Plymouth cars into hot rods. I've bought three motors from 2wd trucks that were being stripped for v-8 and customizing, and one motor I drove home in a '51 Plymouth Cambridge.
