A friend who is a mechanical engineer, and rich enough to indulge himself in such matters, had his 1992 Cummins taken down for inspection after 1,000,000 miles. The testing lab's verdict upon inspecting for wear on pistons, rings, cylinders, bearings, etc: "no measurable wear".
I didn't believe it, either, so don't shoot the messenger.
