I got up this morning and it was damn cold. But the Diesel started without a problem. I don't have a block heater in it but still started without a hitch. Gotta love it. Living in Canada and it being as cold as it is I was really worried at first, but now after living with the diesel all winter so far, I am really impressed!
In answer to your question, it is never really too cold to start an engine. I guess the limiting factor would be how hard a person would have to work to start the engine. If a person would have to prime it with ether, crank and crank the engine over, boost it, and then finally get it running, that would be tough on it. But other then that, if the engine fires right away, it should be ok.
