Up until two years ago, when I bought my 2001 Cummins, I drove my 1956 FF every day here in Fairbanks Alaska. The coldest I drove it was about -40. That was not fun. Not because the truck but because I couldn't keep the frost off the inside of the windows. -20 isn't too bad. My truck has a circulating heater, block heater, oil pan heater, transmission heater, and a heater on the t-case, also a battery blanket. When I plug er in the lights dim in the house. I run synthetic oil in the engine and 70-weight oil in the rear end and front end, tranny, and t-case. I also went with radial tires to avoid the square tire problem.
With adequate pre heat, I've operated vehicles (both gas and diesel, both automobile and aircraft) at temperatures as low as –58. It’s just a matter of the right oils and equipment. For example, a diaphragm fuel pump stops working at –50 so a geared pump is better, stuff like that. When operating at temps that extreme, it becomes more of a matter of if the equipment fails, can you survive long enough to get help. Seven years ago, my wife rolled a vehicle at –35, she had the boy, who just turned two and a newborn with her. Took her twenty minutes to get out of the truck and find a neighbor at home for help. Survival gear and kid seats are cool.
Again –20 to –30 is no big deal with engines as long as you pre-heat and run the right lube.
