Sounds like you had fun. You didn't mention where you attached the line when pulling the stump. It's much easier to remove a stump while the tree is still attached to it. Get the line as high up in the tree as you can at a spot that's still strong. 10' will sometimes do it. 20' is much better. This is a good thing to have an agile teenager do for you. The worst thing to do is to cut the stump off short and then try to remove it. I've only pulled pines, which of course are easier than hardwoods, but have never had to cut any roots. I use a 1950s D4 cat, and spool out enough line so only the top branches hit the cat, which has a pretty stout cage over the seat.
