You're right to be cautious using chlorinated hydrocarbons. Methylene chloride, 1,1,1-trichloroethane and ethylene dichloride used to be very common solvents and can be really nasty. Always wear good rubber gloves and work in well ventilated areas. Some of these solvents can go right through rubber or PVC gloves, so be aware of what's happening all the time.
