We burn it wood in our fireplace here all winter. Use about 4 - 5 cords. We burn mostly oak. I thought many times about buying a splitter. The $700 - $800 is not unreasonable, but I think that a splitter is a good item to rent. I have been renting them about 3 years. Just got doem spitting about 3 cords today, with the wife helping to stach it on the porch. It was a good day for it at 52 degrees in NE PA, Sweatshirt weather! But my experience the last three years makes me glad I rent. The first year, the splitter blew a hydraulic hose. The second year, the carriage split on the rental, and today, on a brand new 8hp Honda they bought from northern (see URL), the pump blew out the primary side of the pump. The logs I am splitting are about 14" in oak. FOr $22 for 4 hours, the carnage that I have been experiencing is not worth buying, or worring about storing the other 360 days that I am not using it.

Happy Holidays All,
Steve
