My Scout troop back in Ohio cut and sold cordwood for our fund raising back in the 70's. I can't say we had hickory or sweetgum, but we cut a lot of wild cherry, oak & maple. We split it green, then let it season for several months. That was before the time of the popular small hp personal home types of splitters and we bought a used 4cyl monster on 15" wheels. The hydraulic cylinder must have been 10 inches in diameter. I think it would have split just about anything and is probably still working for someone to this day! Kind of like the Power Wagon of wood splitters!
Besides the soft wood in Colorado, we seldom cut any trees with trunks much bigger than 15 to 18 inches which help make it easy to split with mauls, sledges, and wedges.
Stay warm, Bruce
