We thought that a hydraulic splitter would be high on our prioritized list of required equipment when we built our place and started heating with wood. Seven winters later, we probably will never get one. Jan does her share of our 5-to-6 cords per year, we have a friend that comes up from the city who likes to work out his frustrations, and I do the rest. We cut a year ahead so its well-seasoned and easy to split. Also our soft Ponderosa Pine, Colorado Spruce, and Douglas Fir makes the job easier than it would be with nice-burning hardwoods. Without the noise and exhaust of a splitter, that chore is actually an enjoyable one! They say that good firewood will warm you up three times...when you cut it, when you split it, and when you burn it! Gotta go upstairs and put another log on ... -6 degrees out this morning!
