Did you remove the cotter pin, unscrew the end cap, and take out the spacer? The ball should just easily fit into the hole on the draglink. Then put the spacer back in, tighten the screw cap, until you have the correct amount of play, then put the cotter pin back in. As you screw the end cap in, it operates against the spring.
This advice is from memory from a different truck, (M35) but I believe that all drag links/pitman arms are pretty much the same.
