Originally the civilian windows were sprung into the lower channels using rubber sheet.
If you just clean up the original channel and stick the glass in with panel sealer it doesn't stress the 'U' section and it should last indefinitely. Also be aware that the left and right hand channels are just different enough not to be able to swop sides....
