Fitting any transmission is all about the bell. I have a 270 in a '56 D500 and it uses a NP 540, it think the 420 would be a direct swap. Might even consider a NP435? Good choice with the Dodge engine though. Desotos seem to be rarer and more expensive, harder to find parts for. less than 10% got a 4bbl intake on the Desotos, and they are unique to the engine.
I wish I could find a Desoto badge for the front of the Power Wagon also!!!!
