I've heard of more than one case where an old worn-out diesel sucked enough crankcase oil past the pistons to keep running even with the fuel shut off. When that happens the only way to stop it is throw something over the air intake. Might be a good idea to have somebody prepared to do that when starting an old diesel that hasn't been run for a long time. Timing and injectors are nice, but many diesels will run more or less so long as some kind of petroleum gets into the cylinders at some point. I had a tractor that I lent to a guy who took it upon himself to mess with the injector pump. He put it back on 180 degrees backwards so it was injecting the top of the exhaust stroke. The engine still started and ran, just smoked like the devil and had no power.
