When I was in grade school in Montana, my Dad rented some land from an old Sioux Indian named George Long. George's daughters would bring him to our ranch a few times a year in the early 50's to get his rent payments. He was very, very old and his daughters were old then. I remember him telling us in very broken English about him actually hunting buffalo with a lance when he was a young man. That had to be in the late 1870's or early 1880's when there were still some buffalo left there. My brothers and I used to find lots of old buffalo horns scattered on the prarie. My Grandpa, Dad and Uncle used to gather up buffalo bones in the 20's and 30's to sell to fertilizer companies.
