This is true as I removed a universal bellhousing from a 1964 D-100 w/318 and a 230L-head & NP420 tranny from a 1960 D-100
and the bellhousings were identical. Yhe NP420 behind the 230 had the 1" longer pilot shaft. That is when all those extra bolt holes and dowel holes made sense!
The issue is the starter as you will need to use the old er 60's starter because the older poly and newer LA starters have different bolt location.
