1970 W-200 electrical problem

On my truck the lights (and all other electrical stuff) go very dim at idle speed.
It is charging and starting fine. Also, if you leave the lights on when the engine is not running, a small (resistor?) on the firewall will begin to get hot and smell like butn plastic. Anybody have any thoughts on this? Is it the result of the stock dodge alternator or regulator going bad? thanks for your help.
