I was thinking about using the modular gear box off of an NP203 transfer case. It is typically used as a gear reduction box at 2:1. But if turned backwards, offers a overdrive of .5:1. You do have to buy or fab a blockoff plate with a bearing or bushing to close off the area that was bolted to the rest of the NP203 transfer case. I have an extra if you're interested.
They are strong New Process gears, if running backwards causes more noise & heat, I would use synthetic 80-90W Amsoil or Redline.
They use this set up on Unimog axles.
