A good friend of mine from high school is married to a girl from Malaysia. They were here for a while, then went back to her homeland, mainly Because Of The Weather!! Prior to coming here, Susan had never experienced a temperature of less than 80 deg. F (27 deg C.)or less than 85% humidity. She was dried out, frozen and miserable the whole time she was here. She used to sleep in sweats', winter gloves and a bellaclava even in the summer. It was either move back together, or she was going back by herself. Of the guys that Patrick knew who married women from that area, "thermal incompatability" was the leading cause of divorce. Maybe Ray moved for similar reasons.

As for NAFTA effects, it happenned here too. I live in a small rural city 2 hours northwest of the CANADA/Montana/North Dakota border. The largest single employer, National Manufacturing, has anounced that they are shutting down the rest of their plant, and moving it to Mexico. Last year, they shipped all the manufacturing jobs south, this time it is the packaging line, and all except the 2 per shift that run the automated warehouse. When a city of 15,000 people loses 160 jobs, that makes a BIG impact. The move though is just a repeat of why they came here from "Marty Land" (lower mainland BC) in the first place. The plant was located here because the land and labour costs/regulations were lower than at their previous home in BC. If China costs less than Mexico, I'm sure they will relocate again. Most corporatons seem to have little, if any "social conscience", and are loyal only to the bottom line. The world is their playground, countries and governments are their pawns, and the "labour force" is just another commodity to be found at the lowest possible cost. (Oh Oh, don't get me started on this...... ) J.V.L.
