Deepest "pit" can mean a lot of things.
if it is a level pit, then your axle pumpkin will be your limiting factor in hanging up in the center hump. Now if the center hump is soft or non-existent you can get away with more depth. Another scenario would be that the left tires will be down 3.5 feet and the right tires are down only 1.5 feet.
In this scenario, you can do a deeper pit
but you will be at a very kiltered angle.
The consistency of the mud/clay/water/sand/rock can also help/hinder your sucess through a pit. In one of the VPW vintage dodge videos, they show a 6x6 pretty much pushing mud with the split front bumpers and still moving forward,
the mud was just above the centerline of the axle hub.
This may help you understand that there are so many variables. A little luck doesn't hurt either ;-)
