Grant, that is a real nice piece you have there. Truck makers used to sell a lot of trucks of all sizes to customers specification. I suspect that if the specification was different from the regular production or normally available options, the manufacturer might have marked the data plates and build sheets with SPEC, indicating "Special Order, or Specified". In the case of your truck, it looks very original and complete; I would guess that the cab/chassis was specified by the fire department as to equipment wanted, such as engine type, transmission, even wheelbase. Then the chassis was sent to the body manufacturer for fittin of the box and other equipment. Today, most dealers a nd manufacturers don't seem to be very interrested in making this type of sale, and instead, stock several different types of regular production vehicles, and if you want something special in a body, or bed arrangement, you have the body mods, or bed made to fit the truck that you can get. I suppose that there is still some way to "SPEC" a truck,,,....! Actually, I just suppose............?!
