{{I have recently purchased a 1958 1\2 ton dodge pickup. It's a 2 wheel drive with a flathead six engine. I'm fairly sure that the truck was in a front end accident early on in it's life, and the engine was removed, and\or replaced. the engine drove fine for 4 months when i got it, but then broke the timing chain, sucked a couple valves, shattered the crankshaft, and blew a sizable hole out the side of the block. What I need to know is how to tell what size engine it is, and what year is was made}} The engine number will tell you what the engine originally came out of. As you look at the engine from over the drivers side fender, the number will be facing you and towards the front of the engine. It will have the engine code followed by the sequential number. I would give you the probable starting number and codes, but for some reason my books skip the years 1958-59. 1960 and up are covered as well as 1957 on back.
