Hi Rick,
I am sure alot of more knowledgable folks will chime in here but my understanding is you will want to go down, as there is often a ridge worn at the topmost point of travel of the upper piston ring. I havent used a slide hammer but have tapped them out with a block of softwood (spruce 2x4).
