Taking your remarks at face value, the lever moves around a lot when it is in any particular gear selection, there may be a nylon ball that has fallen off the end of the gear lever. There is probably a retaining ring that holds the lever in place. Remove it, pull the lever out, and look at the end of the lever; see what you have.
