I remember a heated discussion about this a while back. My only thought is to make some provision to drain or blow the water out of it easily, since it will definitely collect water. Maybe the drain on the secondary receiver would be good enough. I've never tried poly for an air line but would would give it a try since it's flexible, tough, cheap, and won't blow out violently like PVC. The poly also has the advantage that if water freezes in it, it won't break.
Not being one who likes digging ditches, if it was my project I'd run every kind of wire and pipe I might ever think I might need, and put in about a 3" plastic conduit with a pulling rope run through it for unanticipated needs.
