Ballast resistor==if you need one==goes electrically before the primary of the coil. If your system is negative ground it goes on the positive side ahead of the coil.
Whether you need one depends on the coil you have. Some are marked "use with resistor"; some are marked "no resistor required"; some aren't marked at all. You need to either enquire of the vendor or look at what it came out of. Your after market petronix doesn't affect this end of the wiring.
