I don't know anything about the winch identification but I went through a similar process trying to collect clues as to the year of my 1955-1956 C3-PW.
Several folks from this and Gordon's forum pointed out areas to look for dates:
1. engine head
2. wheels
3. back of speedometer
4. underside of exhaust manifold
5. transmission

What does your data plate show for VIN and Model?

1955 or 1956
