In mud or snow the tires get packed between the duals and negate the tread design, In sand a dual tire setup is called a trencher. You just dig right down and bury yourself.
Duals first came about because of their ability to increase the cargo capacity, they are great on the street. However, offroad, they are old technology now, one large tire is BETTER than duals. That is why you got wheel hop Mark, not because of the twin axles but because of the dual tires on the twin axles.
