PCV valve

This is a continuation of a thread a ways down the forum, but as a refresh is iminent, decided to start new. How important is a PCV valve? There is nothing but tubing from my oil fill neck and my carb. No brass fitting with a check ball. Whats the difference? I would not want to disturb the finely tuned emission control system on this truck and start polluting!
