This is a subject that has come up before, with lots of opinions. As I recall, the numbers that make sense for the 230 are red line of 3700 rpm and never exceed 4300 rpm. I am not positive, so someone back me up or call BS. As for red line, that is the top speed you can run it at all day long.
I'm excited because this week I get to pick up my rebuilt 230. The guy did a super job on it, but is mostly working with v-8s, so I hope he didn't miss any flathead details. He tried to tell me the water distribution tube was optional, but I think I convinced him that it should be cleaned up and reinstalled.
By the way, when mine blew (threw rod #1) on the freeway, my tach was indicating just over 3000 rpm, so when it's time to go, it will go. I just hope it lasts another 50 years now that it is rebuilt!
