In my errant days of youth, I became a life member of the Sierra Club, I understand that there are two percenters who ruin it for everyone, that was the original intent of the preservation acts, whether an ignorant off-roader, or a greedy logging company, some protection was needed. However I was not talking about Wilderness areas, or areas specifically set aside for cross country sking ( every had to suck in large volunms of fresh air in the exhaust of a snowmobile??)or roadless areas, I was refering to forest areas that have always been acessible by road, whether it was wagon roads, logging roads or roads for vehicular traffic. The Defacto attempt by environmental extremist to close ALL areas to vehicle traffic is what is happening here in the West.
The last thing I want to see or hear when backpacking is a a motorized vehicle, there are MILLIONS of acres set aside for just that use. Now that precedent has been set, these folks would like nothing better than to close ALL areas. There has to be balance in our land use. I'd be willing to wager that those ignorants that are tearing up your area "from out of state" probably had their own state closed off to their use. I don't know what the answer is to stupidity, except for more education, but that is no excuse to close off all public lands to only a few.
