Thermostat ???

I have one of the Danish WM300 from VPW. Long story short I am replacing the thermostat. When I "opened her up" I found the old thermostat pretty much broken beyond any functionality (no doubt been like this for years, truck works fine "as is" with out any overheating problems) So I order a new thermostat from VPW. I came today and only remotely looks like the pieces of the old one, and the only way this new one will fit is if it is what I think is "up side down". Also the new one has slots in it so even if it is closed water/steam can still pass through it.
So my question is, did VPW send me the wrong thermostat, or just a different kind?

What should I do???
