I don't have an answer for you although it would be neat if knobs provided another way to identify years/models.
My 55-56 C3-PW has black knobs and is a 6-volt system. The headlamp switch and knob have been replaced (white knob, no writing). I found what looks to be the original (with black knob and writing) in the glove box!
My parts book (reprint of WDX through C3, April 1956, probably the same as yours) shows the two switches, 6v: 1260 727, 12v: 1660 525. Also only one headlamp knob part number: 596 601.
What do the B series knobs look like?
