To be a Bus Driver for a School your insurance would kill you to start with. As far as the licence you need a Class B CDL with a passenger endorsment for over 16 passingers and a Air Brake endorsement if the bus has air brakes. You must have a current Physical, CPR/First Aid also. In Washington State you would have to have a back ground check with the local police, State Patrol and a FBI check to make sure you do not have any Sex Offender Records or bas driving record. Your driving record will be checked back 5 years. You cannot have any Allcohal DWI offences in the last 3 years I beleive. If you get one while not driving a Bus and working you lost your job. If you get a reckless driving ticket you lost your job and after so many points agaist you for other tickets you lose your job also. Each year they do a back ground check just to keep tabs on you. You can get called in at any time for a drug test and if you don't take it you lost your job. Your Bus has to be inspected by DOT each year and be up to standards in place which are changing. Older Busses are now outlawed to be used anymore. They made a bunch of saftey updates that why you see so many cheap school buses for sale. I know this because I have driven a School Bus for the last 6 years. You also can't have any Alcohal in you system or very little and be able to drive. Your blood level is I beleive .04 to be conciderd DWI so you can have a lunch time beer or get real drunk the night befor work. They own your soul if you drive School Kids in my State!! Mark H.
