The way I understand it is both trunnion bearings and the knuckle all get grease. If there is/was gear lube in the knuckle housing the inner axle seal must have failed allowing gear lube to leak into the knuckle from the front axle.

The felt wipers will keep the grease in, it's when the inner seal fails and the knuckle starts filling with gear lube that they start leaking. I think the reason 90% of the trucks leak there is becasue 90% of the trucks inner axle seals have failed ;-)

I believe later W series trucks with closed knuckles may have had neoprene wipers and may have used gear lube. Don't know? Maybe Mopar Norm can chime in here.

Marine Grease is an aluminum based grease (blue in color) used for boat trailer wheel bearings (and other places I'm sure). I used it in both of my knuckles when I rebuilt them. It's supposed to have better water repellent properties or doesn't wash off as easily or doesn't mix as easily or something like that :-)

Take care,
Tim
