I. Basic Info

Small blocks have the distributor in the back near the firewall.
Small blocks have a stamping on the front side of the block right
below where the driver's side head bolts on.

Big blocks have the distributor near the front by the water pump.

A Chilton's manual or factory service manual will show you where on
the various engines you will find the serial number and engine type
info.

II. Break-down by Engine Type

1. "Old" A engine - 318 through 66 (67 in Canada), other smaller
displacements in early years

Distributor in rear, wavy rocker covers with two bolts through top.
Displacement and year/date info stamped in front face of block below
left (driver's side) cylinder head.

2. LA engine - 273, 67+ 318, 340, 360

Distributor in rear, flat sided rocker covers with 5 bolts in edges.
Displacement and year/date info stamped in front face of block below
left (driver's side) cylinder head.

3. B engines (350-361-383-400)

Distributor in front, displacement stamped on angled pad near
alternator on right (passenger) side -- directly underneath the
distributor cap. It is sometimes hard to see.

4. RB engines (early 383, 413, 426, 440)

Distributor in front, displacement stamped on horizontal pad just to
left of center at front of engine by intake -- in front of the intake
manifold valley pan on the driver's half of the block. This is mostly
covered by the A/C compressor if the car has one.

Note on the differences between 383 B and 383 RB's:

The 383 started out as an RB (4.03" bore x 3.75" stroke) in '59,
alongside the larger-bore 413 (4.188" bore, same stroke). In '61 the
low-block "B" engines came out, including the new 383 (4.25" bore x
3.375" stroke). The 413 remained an RB engine through '65, and was
replaced with the larger-bore 440 (4.326" bore x 3.75" stroke) in '66.
Note that the previous chronology applies to availability on Chrysler
models only; the 350 and 361 "B" engines were available in the Dodge
line-up in '58, and the low-block 383 in '59. Dodge didn't get "RB"
engines until '61 with the 413.

The 426 Hemi has spark plug holes through the rocker covers.

5. Old-style Hemi - a myriad of sizes through 58.

Distributor in rear, spark plug holes in rocker covers.

Old hemis have a code stamped in front of the intake valley on the
block. It's a thin area that this is stamped on, and the code is
'cryptic'.

engines listed for the various years. In other words, the 440-6bbl
making 390hp was coded as V in the VIN in 1970. Recall that the 5th
digit (of 13 digit VIN's) is the engine code.
