I like the bigger 1/2" stuff (150' to the MU-2 drum). I think it spools into the drum better and is less prone to kinking and wrapng up on you. The red stripe stuff is what all the loggers around here use and it's reported to be the best. I get it new for 60 cents a foot. If you dont plan on using it much get the galvanized stuff in 7/16", it's stiffer, but it wont rust. If you do plan on using your winch get the regular steel stuff and grease it up good, then buy a winch cover from Vintage to dress it up a bit.
Another consideration is where you do you wheeling. If you were in the desert, I would say get the smallest diameter you can, maby 3/8" that way you can put more lengeth on you drum. If you get stuck out there, you may have a long way to go to fing a good anchor or purchase point to put your block on. Where I live, it's hard to get the truck to fit between all the trees, so I dont usally need to long a pull, but I do need stronger cable as I get myself mired in the goop pretty good.
