How to pull poles out of the ground?

I am looking at pulling a lot of 4x4 fence posts out of the ground, and considering the Braden winch as one possibility, and my tractor/chains as another possibility.

I am thinking that there must be a trick for applying vertical force to pull the poles, rather than horizontal force which might "tear" them out of the ground but wouldn't be as good.

I don't have a gin pole/a-frame/derrick set up on the truck.

Is there any kind of lever, roller, or other trick to convert the pull of a winch cable into vertical pulling? Anybody have any ideas?
