Dan, You could be correct & it sounds like you know more about this truck than I but I'm still mystified as to how any 2nd or 3rd generation Cummins could even compete with this truck towing.
Lets look at it component by component...
The engine has 3 times more torque than a new 2003 Cummins or Powerstroke. It has 50% more torque than Piers's(PDR) 670HP 5.9 Cummins.
The transmission...well, we won't even discuss that..it's certainly stronger than any 2003 combination I think we could agree...no?
As for the Transfercase I would hazard a guess that the divorced older transfercases like this are stronger than the light duty new stuff but I could stand corrected here.
My guess would be that they may be noisy & more U-Joints etc but stronger & more trouble-free.
Brakes/ Well those calipers he used are about the most expensive you can buy. Are they as good as a 2003...not likely..so there's a point for the new truck.
Axles? Well it's got lockers both front & rear so if he hasn't been breaking lots of axles, I'd say they must be plenty strong to withstand that kind of power.
I'd be interested in hearing which components you feel are inferior to the 2003 components?
Why don't you think it will tow well? It's no taller than a 2003 Cummins or Ford according to my eye. It's certainly not as tall as my 93 Cummins wich will tow any trailer built.
I do agree a 2WD Dually is the best towing vehicle out there, but we aren't comparing 2WD's here & that truck would still out-pull the 2WD on the hills.
Overkill? Yes...Impresive? Yes.Ha Ha!
If only it were orange I'd have to buy it!
