there is no substitute for safety. when i did my command car rims, bob stahl showed me how to do it right. remote air valve, chained & nuts in place. getting the rubber off of the rims was accomplished by taking them to a heavy truck dealer. the rims had a beadlock in them that kept the rubber from being forced down. i believe combat rims to be superior to the ring style because of the bolt ring. they are a pretty interesting assembly when treated with respect. once you get them sandblasted, inspected, painted & new tires on, they should be easier to work with in the future. anti sieze on the threads and possibly the rim mating surface might be a good idea to prevent the same thing from happening to your grandkids.
