I am not sure what the latch mechanism is on the 1953 model since my experience is on the WC models.
In addition to worn door hinges. Examine the latch mechanism on the doors. The tooth on the latch is prone to wearing out before the catch on the door post, and the spring may break or weaken. Check and see how much travel and tension you have. I have built up the tooth by welding and grinding (after disassembly). The door springs are available from the Dodge vendors. Whole door latch mechanisms are also available.
I also put in seat belts for safety.
