I use Spectro Oils SX-1 chain wax. It's used by motocross riders to lubricate the chains on Motocross and other motorcycles. It comes in a spray can with a long thin tube that can be fitted into the nozzle, (like WD-40). It goes on as a liquid but quickly dries leaving a waxy texture to the cable/chain/etc. which is pliable, protects from rain/water, and does not attract dust.dirt like oils.
