Dave,
Orange peel os a descriptive term of an uneven paint surface. I first heard of it from Mr. Jackowski, a shop teacher in Wayne New Jersey, who had a summer house in Montauk. His son and I were very good friends, and we spent many hours refurbishing their boats during the fall/winter/spring. In exchange for the work we provided, he taught us many, many, many, important facts that helped us in opur own pursuits...refurbishing our own old VW's.
If I remember corredctly he said FORD utilized the orange peel to keep the paint thicker so thqat it would last through many a polishing. This was in marked contrast to our beloved VW paint jobs!
This may have been an opinion as more recent information seems to say that orange peel is never desireable. When you touch the paint with orange peel it would have a texture similiar to a orange peel though less prominent.
Have any of you ever spent a January Sunday lieing on your back out in the cold seaside winds hefting a 75# belt sander, taking off marine lead paint from a 32 foot lapstraqke hull? The best days of my teenage winters!

Eddie
