I used the rubber lip type of seal on my '50 218 plymouth block (now a 230),which originally had the bolt on rope type seal. I didn't notice any difference in the small "h" shaped pieces that flank the rear main cap. My block was machined for either seal. The rear main cap, however, had an oil passage hole from the oil pan side of the cap clear through the cap to the flywheel side, that was covered up by the original rope seal mounted to the face of the cap. I didn't notice this at first, and had the engine re-installed in the car before someone online asked me what I did about the hole. I replied, "what hole...." Sure enough, there it was upon closer inspection with a flashlight and a wire probe. I pulled the engine, pan, and rear main cap. The only way I could see to fix the problem without finding another seal, was good old JB Weld. Below is a photo before the JB Weld. I hope it holds....
