I owned a former telephone company PW that had a front hoist (I'm not getting into the gin-pole vs A-frame discussion) for setting poles.

The two points where the bracing was attached were large (1 inch dia) bolts that protruded from the cowl, just below the cowl lights. The bracing was attached to the two bolts with giant wingnuts that had a "wingspan" of 6 inches.

This method place the load further back along the frame, and I suppose added a little more stability. Since the braces were solid, as opposed to chains or cables, there was little chance of the whole deal flipping over backwards.

The winch had an extended shaft which allowed the attachment of a cable-winding drum.

I have some old telephone company books around here someplace, and I will see if I can find a picture or two of this arrangement. Unfortunately, the drawings show the artist's idea of a generic truck, sort of a mixture of an IH and a GMC, not a PW.
