Last time I checked, NYS law provides for a "5-mile" exclusion to the prohibition of riding in the rear of a truck. This exclusion presumably allows farm workers or casual hitch-hikers to get where they are going. I believe it also says something about the height of the bed sides needing to be 18 inches.
The police chief in my town takes kids to and from soccer practice in his pickup. If it's OK for him, it's OK for me, that's my defense. Of course, this is a small town and (usually) everybody gets along.
