On an Oxy/Acetylene torch you can get a flash back where the flame is no longer burning at the tip of the torch but traveling back along your hose to the cylinder! You can imagine what happens when the flame gets to the cylinder!

Our school shop had an gas welding area setup with tanks outside the building. The gas ran through a device that had water in it. The gas bubbled through the water and on into the lines to the welding booths. If a flash back accured it would only burned back to the water device.

I still remember the first day where the teacher blew up a balloon with oxygen. Tacked it to a piece of plywood and then touched it with a flaming torch. Balloon went pop from the flame. Did the same thing with the acetylene and the balloon kinda went poof in a small flame. He mixed acetylene and oxygen together and did it again and it went BOOOOOOOOOM and shook the room. Got our attention real fast as to what we were dealing with!
