Remembering back to my service station (not gas station) days, when an overheating car would limp into the station on a hot summer day, we would tell the owner to keep the engine running at an idle. Then we would raise the hood and run a stream of water over the cooling fins of the radiator. this allowed the radiator to disapate many times the normal amount of heat and the cooler radiator water would flow back into the block to pick up more super heated water. We obvously did not spray cold water on the block. After a few minutes, the owner would report that the temp guage was reading normal. At this time, we would allow him to turn off the engine and then look for the usual suspects.

One hot summer day, one lady drove into the station superheated. She shut the engine off before we could get to her and proceded to tell us that her husband had removed all the hoses the night before and told her to pick up some new ones the next day. She was driving the car around town without any hoses at all. Needless to say, that engine never ran again. It sure made a lot of high pitched crinkling sounds as it sat there.

Best Wishes
Lonnie
